Earthquake Hits In Monipur  State of India


  


The earthquake hit a magnitude of 6.8 degrees north-east of India, said the US Geological Survey (USGS), near the border with Myanmar and Bangladesh.








The quake occurred at 04:35 local time (23:05 GMT), about 33km (20 miles) north-west of Imphal, capital of Manipur state, according to the US Geological Survey.

Strong tremors were felt in the region.

BBC correspondent in Dhaka says Salman Saeed seen many people who have fled their homes in Bangladesh.


The US Geological Survey estimated that up to 98m people in the area had felt the quake.

The region has a history of strong earthquakes caused by the collision north Indian and Eurasian plates. They are moving towards each other at a rate of 4-5cm annually.

In 2005, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Pakistani side of Kashmir left more than 75,000 dead.

In April 2015, Nepal has suffered the worst earthquake in its history with 9000 people were killed and about 900,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
